Shopping for a rug is like shopping for clothes; you subconsciously analyze the color, fabric, and design depending on how you would look and feel in it. Keep a note of the busyness or activity level in a room before picking a rug out. The following section will take you through the essential points to remember while buying the rug you need.
Some rugs like leather shag or flokati (shag wool) can be cleaned by simply shaking them vigorously. There is no need to vacuum these rugs; simply beat or rake it after giving it a good shake. However, rugs like oriental or bamboo need to be vacuumed regularly. Vacuum both sides of the rug, running it gently down its surface in straight lines. If it has a looped design, do not use the rotating beater bar, but direct suction. Don't vacuum frilled edges of a rug; simply dust the frills using a stiff broom before vacuuming the area around it. If the area experiences heavy foot traffic, you will need to vacuum the rug daily.
When you have liquid spills on your wool rugs, then you must act immediately, so that the stain does not set into the fibers. Blot out maximum amount of liquid with the help of dry paper towels. While absorbing the liquid, do not rub the surface of the rug as it can badly damage the fibers. Once all the liquid is soaked up and the rug is dry, clean the spot left behind with the help of a spot remover suitable for wool. To be on the safe side, it is advisable to test the spot remover on one hidden corner of the rug and then use it on the visible part. Start applying it from the outer edge of the spot and then move inwards. This will prevent any further spreading of the spot.
Now place the carpet (runner) along the entire staircase. Starting from bottom, tie the carpet to the tack strips, step-by-step. Fix it permanently in place using a hammer, in the corners where it will be folded. Stretch it into place using a knee kicker or a seaming iron. Repeat this at each tread before attaching the carpet to the tack strip on the next tread.
