Cut wool strips of about 3-4 inches wide to a length of your choice. You can use old wool blankets or other woolen clothing, but take care that the fabric is not completely worn out as it may tear the rug. You can even contact your local dealer for used blankets which is of no use to them. If you want to make a rug matching your home decor, you can always buy wool in various colors.
First, we will cut the wool fabric. Depending on thin or thick you wish to keep the braids, cut the fabric into 1―3" wide strips.
Tufting is a technique of creating carpets, or multi-needle looms using machines which are directed by computers, to create various styles and patterns of carpet using synthetic yarns. Tufts are basically yarn fibers, either of natural fabric or synthetic base. Hundreds of needles stitch a number of rows of carpet yarn tufts through a backing fabric called the primary backing. The needles push the yarn through a primary backing fabric, where a loop holds the yarn in place to form a tuft as the needle is removed. These tufts project from the surface of the base, and may be loops, as in a Berber carpet, or the loops are cut using blades to create a cut pile carpet. The tufted carpet has a reputation of being sturdy and durable for a long time.
Rug pads are also available in the market which can be used to reduce shedding of rug fibers. Cleaning wool rugs carefully, without using harsh methods can also lessen the degree of shedding. This problem is something you cannot avoid. By using the tips mentioned above, one can definitely minimize it and make a clever move of choosing a wool rug that matches the color of your furniture upholstery so as to conceal rug fibers that stick to the furniture.
